General Information


Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain, founded over two thousand years ago as a Roman city.  You can follow the traces of its history as you walk through the city: the Gothic Quarter, built over the Roman ruins, is the center of the old city; many of the buildings date from medieval times (the Cathedral, the Great Hall –Saló del Tinell-, the Basilica of Santa María del Mar).

The Eixample district displays Catalan Modernism Architecture, developed between 1850 and 1950. Barcelona is the city of Gaudí (La Pedrera, with its magical terraces, and the Casa Batlló, located on the central boulevard, Pg de Gràcia, the Park Güell, and the Basilica la Sagrada Familia).

A splendid counterpart to Gaudí’s work can be found in the buildings of Domènech i Montaner (Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Palau de la Música Catalana), designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, an other architects like Jujol and Puigi i Cadalfach.

Montjuïc is the largest park of Barcelona, with 203 ha invites you to visit the Magic Fountain, the Botanic Gardens, the Spanish Village, The Olympic Ring, the Palau Sant Jordi, and the telecommunication tower designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Barcelona has a large number of museums: The National Museum of Art of Catalonia has unique holdings of Romanesque and Gothic Renaissance and Baroque Art. In contemporary art, the Picasso’s Museum. The Fundació Miró and the Fundació Tàpies are splendid collections of works by artists  who were born or worked in Barcelona.

The city has many venues for live music and theatre, including the world-renowned Gran Teatro del Liceo (Opera, Ballet), the Palau de la Musica Catalana, and the modern Auditori, Concert Halls.

Barcelona is a first class tourist destination, the ideal place for meetings and congresses. It completed its sea-front with the new Forum area, and the technology district 22@ dedicated to talent and innovation.

Barcelona combines the gentleness of the Mediterranean shores with the drive and capacity of a young society.
